How to Be a Good Apartment Neighbor

Living in an apartment is unique. Unlike houses, condos, or similar set-ups, you’re sharing a building with other people. With your neighbors in such close proximity, it’s important to be mindful. Luckily, there are some simple things you can do to be considerate to the people around you.

Be Mindful of Noise Levels

One of the biggest complaints people have about their apartment neighbors has to do with noise. Remember that you’re in a shared space, and keep volume to a minimum. This means respecting quiet hours, refraining from large noisy parties and knowing when not to turn up music or the television more than necessary. If you live on an upper floor, rugs are also a great way to muffle footsteps.

Respect Shared Amenities

When you’re in an apartment, certain things will be shared with other people. If you have a shared laundry room, for example, make sure that you’re taking your things out of the washer and dryer in a timely manner. For parking lots, make sure you’re parked correctly and are not taking up more than one space. Keep hallways clean, and don’t block access into other apartments.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner

If you have a furry friend, make sure that you’re cleaning up after them. Playing with them regularly also makes sure that they don’t have excess energy that would cause them to be noisy or disruptive late at night.

Keep Spaces Tidy

Even in the privacy of your apartment, it’s important to keep things clean so that you don’t impact your neighbors. Make sure you’re taking out trash regularly, ventilating bathrooms to prevent mold, and similar things that could cause nearby apartments distress.

Be Friendly!

A little kindness goes a long way! Something as simple as saying hello when you pass by each other in the hallway can make a huge impact on your relationship. Don’t be afraid to join community events to grow closer as neighbors. That way if conflict does come up, it will be much easier to handle maturely.

If you do run into a conflict that you can’t handle on your own, reach out to a landlord to help.
