THANKSGIVING FUN FACTS:

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 over a three-day harvest festival.

Abrham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday on October 3, 1863.

There are four towns in the United States named “Turkey”. They can be found in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

The tradition of football on Thanksgiving began in 1876 with a game between Yale and Princeton. The first NFL games were played on Thanksgiving in 1920.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids

This 158 acre park earned honors for the country’s top sculpture park featuring world class sculptures, children’s gardens, tropical conservatory, and artist collections.

Riding the Dunes

Silver Lake State Park in Mears, MI offers 450 acres of dunes for riding your own ORV or a rental. Open through October 31st.

Children’s Zoo

Experience entertainment including plays, national theater acts, concerts, sports, museums, exceptional restaurants (from BBS to fine dining) and a Children’s Zoo. All in Saginaw and Saginaw County (Frankenmuth and Birch Run are close by).

Everglades of Michigan

A Three-Hour Tour. Again, in Saginaw. But who knew it! Visit part of the largest watershed in the state. Go by yourself or maybe with a group (up to 10).

Rail Trail

Yep, again, in Saginaw. Visit the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail for an 11 mile ride on a 12 foot wide paved rail trail that runs from Saginaw to St. Charles. Bike through natural areas and cross over 7 restored railroad bridges over creeks, rivers and wetlands.

Caseville Cheers

Make plans. October 7th in Caseville is Patio Pour Brewfest. A Dog O Weenie Costume Contest with pups is October 22nd. The Witches Walk takes place on October 28th (a witch’s ball will be held at Thumb Brewery from 6:30 -10:00 pm. Holly Berry Weekend, a town holiday shopping event, is November 4 – 5. Thumb Brewery for craft brews is open 6 days a week – closes in November and reopens in February.
